Semihydrogenation of polyunsaturated fatty substances

Oleic acid methyl ester is a highly demanded renewable raw material, not only as an intermediate for petrochemical end products such as biodiesel, but also in the food industry monounsaturated cis-configured fatty substances are of high interest. In addition to this, such fatty substances form a clearly defined natural basis for cosmetics, plastics and detergents. Fats and oils of natural origin always contain a mixture of different triglycerides, which are saturated to varying degrees. With the aid of selective partial hydrogenation after transesterification with methanol, these polyunsaturated fatty acid methyl esters (PUFAMEs) are to be hydrogenated to monounsaturated fatty acid methyl esters without obtaining the saturated downstream product.
